Life Sciences Work Underway

Currently under construction in Cambridgeport, two MIT-owned buildings at 130 Brookline Street and 17 Tudor Street together form a small campus with adjacent open space and parking. 17 Tudor Street (red brick, originally built in 1924) is nearing completion this month, with 130 Brookline (buff-colored masonry, originally built in 1927) planned to wrap up in June 2013.

Stay tuned for construction updates and photos!

Visiting Worcester’s CitySquare

I wanted to share a few construction photos from the Arrowstreet-designed Unum Headquarters building in Worcester. Part of the CitySquare development we have been master planning and designing, the Unum building (One Mercantile Square) will open this fall. It’s great to see this striking building set against the sky as I pass the DCU Center every site visit. We all look forward to seeing this building complete and the rest of CitySquare coming together!

Arrowstreet at Bisnow: Life Sciences Summit

Recently, a small delegation of Arrowstreet architects attended the Bisnow Life Sciences Summit. Jim Batchelor, our President and CEO, moderated one of two panels, which included recognized industry experts from a variety of perspectives who spoke on the strength of the Life Sciences industry in the Cambridge area and in Massachusetts. The panels included Tim Stoll of BioMed Realty Trust, Jeff Lockwood of Novartis, Pamela Norton of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, Chuck Pappalardo of Suffolk Construction Company, Peter Calkins of Forest City Boston, and Robert Beal of The Beal Companies. The discussion was inspiring, and affirmed many of the experiences we’ve had at Arrowstreet in recent years working with life sciences planning expert Dan Winny and our clients designing lab and office spaces. Both panels also provided a very optimistic perspective about today and long term expectations for the growth and development of this key industry in Massachusetts…

Arrowstreet in the New York Times

The new corporate headquarters for Rechler Equity, designed by Arrowstreet, was recently featured in the New York Times. The article highlights how the vision for this leading real estate company is reflected in the building’s iconic design, calling it “a sleek corporate calling card.” Arrowstreet transformed a former industrial building into a contemporary glass and steel structure marked by a torqued, rotating faceted form that serves as a two-story lobby…

Worcester CitySquare: Rising from the Dust of Demolition

We’re happy to share these recent construction photos of the CitySquare development in downtown Worcester. Arrowstreet has been working on the planning and design of the mixed-use development which will create a revitalized neighborhood and reintroduce retail and entertainment to Worcester’s downtown. The first building to be built in this development is One Mercantile Place, a 200,000 square foot office building that will consolidate Unum’s Worcester offices. Construction is tearing along, and we are on track for a October 2012 completion.

Demolition, blasting and removal of rock, and site excavation are well underway in preparation for the construction of this mixed-use development that includes retail, restaurants, a Wegman’s grocery store, health club, office, and a parking garage as part of the first phase. Stay tuned for more updates as the structures begin to take shape!

Worcester CitySquare Building H Topping Off Ceremony

Arrowstreet recently celebrated a big moment with the City of Worcester, Unum, and many others when the steel frame was finally topped off at the CitySquare Development’s newest office highrise on January 4th. It was a brutally cold day, but a well-attended and warmly welcomed milestone for the many people involved. The patriotically painted beam was signed and hoisted 120 feet up into the air to be placed in its final home. What an impressive sight: an evergreen tree on one side and the American flag on the other, flying up in the sky marking the building’s official presence in Worcester’s skyline…

NAIOP Tour of Flex-Lab Sells Out in One Email

As a follow up to my previous post on Universal Flex Labs: A New Approach to Lab Space, the NAIOP site tour was a big hit; so much so that the organization suspended their event marketing after a single email. Attendees had a lot of questions about Arrowstreet’s Flex Lab design for Biomed’s 325 Vassar Street…
