AFH in the BAC Sustainable Design Program
BAC Master of Design Studies Sustainable Design from The Boston Architectural College on Vimeo.
I wanted to take a moment to share this video, put out by the BAC’s sustainable design program. The beginning shows our Artists for Humanity project, the shots taken during a tour I gave for students in the sustainable design degree program.
For more information, see the BAC’s page on the program.
KIPP Construction Update
I’m pleased to share the above recent construction photos from KIPP Academy. The fiber cement siding on one elevation of the high school wing has just gone up, so we finally have a near-complete exterior wall. Prime painting has begun on the interior; things are moving along quickly at this point, and we remain on track for an August completion.
Speaking at SCUP: Campus Hospitality
On April 12, I will be speaking at SCUP’s North Atlantic Conference alongside Peter Riley of Harvard University and John Kiely of Collegiate Hospitality on the topic of “Positioning Hospitality on Campus.” During this toolkit, Peter will share valuable firsthand experience from Harvard’s campus hotels and how the University is positioning these facilities to meet institutional goals for the future. I will share key suggestions for planning and designing campus hotels, while John will share the developer’s perspective…
AFH Canopy Wins Best Installation Contest
Artists for Humanity has a new entry canopy, which has just won an award from 3-Form. The original design of the building included structural points of support, but at the time of its construction there was not enough funding to build a canopy. Now, just in time for their 20th anniversary, they’ve got one, funded by the Brown Fund and design/built by the AFH students, under guidance by a group of MassArt students taught by Sam Batchelor. Pat Cornelison and I helped in the design charrettes and supported the project in various other ways.
KIPP Academy Lynn Update
The New KIPP Academy Lynn project is being delivered using the “CM at Risk” procurement method. Consigli Construction Co. is the Construction Manager for the project, and we have been working with their team during construction to leverage the Building Information Model (BIM) that was originally used to design and document the project…
Excel Academy in the Press
An article about the Excel Academy expansion appeared recently in the Boston Business Journal. We’ve been working with Excel Academy for several months now on this project and are excited to see it moving to the next stage…
Campus Hospitality
Where do you stay when you need a place to spend the night and you are near a school or university? Arrowstreet has just completed construction on two such projects and is in the midst of design for another. The University of Massachusetts in Lowell and Harvard University are giving new thoughts to the potential market for guests who wish to stay on-campus, and they are undertaking designs which transform their offerings. Another related example is our recent work for Phillips Academy Andover at the Andover Inn…
KIPP Construction Update
I’d like to share a few photos showing the construction progress of KIPP Academy Lynn. With 100% of the steel up, exterior sheathing applied to one face of the building, and masonry installed on the mockup panel, the building is really starting to take shape. We are on track for a fall 2012 opening.
Patriot Place Time-Lapse
When I have the opportunity to provide routine construction site visits over an extended period of time, I often make an effort to photograph the progress from a consistent given vantage point. Sometimes my efforts are successful, while at other times construction-related activities can make this challenging.
A New Home for Congregation Shir Chadash
Arrowstreet is designing a permanent location for Shir Chadash’s growing reform Judaic congregation. The planned 14,000-square-foot building reflects the congregation’s strongly held beliefs in nature, sustainability, and social-justice, and is designed to meet the changing demands of the congregation.
