Summer Bowling with Arrowstreet
This summer, we celebrated our second annual Flatbread Bowling tournament at the Flatbread Company at Sacco’s Bowl Haven. Over the course of eight weeks, our league of extraordinary Arrowstreet’ers enjoyed candlepin bowling paired with delicious flatbread pizza. The score was close again this year, but Team A-I ended the season victorious over Team J-Z. It was a fun way to enjoy the summer; we’re all curious as to where near Post Office Square we might be able to continue the tradition next year!
Brooklyn Boulders Grand Opening
We’re so happy to join Brooklyn Boulders at the Grand Opening of their new rock climbing gym tonight. The 38,000-square-foot gym has 45-foot tall climbing walls (the largest bouldering walls in the Northeast!), yoga, weights, treadmills, and copious ways to join in the fun – from kid’s programs to climbing classes to commercial incubator space for business start-ups…
Green Cooperation: Speaking on the Boston SCT Panel
ICSC and Shopping Centers Today magazine are starting a new series of short retail conferences, called SCT Live, to be held in targeted regions throughout the country. They just announced the programs, which start this month. I will be one of the panelists on the program in Boston in November on the topic of how retailers and shopping center owners can partner to create more sustainable facilities, entitled “Green Cooperation.” For more information, see below or go to the website: www.icsc.org/sctlive…
BAC Graduation
On May 24th David Burn and I graduated from the Boston Architectural College as part of a 148 student graduating class. We proudly participated in a BAC tradition walking in full regalia from 320 Newbury Street (the main BAC building) to the commencement ceremony at Old South Church in Copley Square, accompanied by a Dixie land band. It must have been quite a sight, judging from the looks on bystanders’ faces! The commencement ceremony itself was a great celebration. There was a pleasantly personal feel and focus on the students by the president of the school, Ted Landsmark, and an interesting commencement address from Architect of the Capital, Stephen Ayers…
ICSC Real Estate Convention in Las Vegas
Arrowstreet has attended the annual International Council of Shopping Centers Real Estate Convention (RECon) for over 20 years. With all of the major shopping center developers, real estate brokers and retailers present, the convention is THE place to be for anybody in retail real estate development. Some years, more than 40,000 people descend upon Las Vegas to plan projects, broker deals, and network. This year, the convention ran from May 19 through May 22. We were there and the mood in the convention hall was enthusiastic…
Rebuilding Together
I recently participated in a volunteer event organized by Rebuilding Together Boston. Rebuilding Together’s mission is to provide critical repairs and renovations for low-income homeowners across the United States. The organization gathered about 300 volunteers to participate in building rehabilitation projects throughout the city. The site I visited was a Dorchester home owned by a 63-year-old single woman who suffers from…
Fenway High School Senior Science Fair
Last December, Matt Rice and I spent a morning helping out as judges for the Fenway High School Senior Science Fair. It was a fun venture out of the office, a way to get involved with the community, and a great way to get to know some of the students, since Arrowstreet is currently designing a renovation and addition to their school. The science fair was held at the Museum of Science with several dozen seniors presenting their experiments. We were given a rubric and an overview of the grading, then were sent off to inquire about students’ work. While there are too many great examples to list, I specifically remember one student who studied the effect of hair coloring products on the strength of hair; a study which has some potential to be quite useful in applications outside of the classroom. I’m excited to see what next year’s seniors come up with.
Sustainability is Good Business
Last month I had the opportunity to attend the Boston Chamber event “Making the Business Case for Sustainability”. This was a panel discussion of the integration of sustainability into business with representatives Johanna Jobin from EMD Millipore, Carolyn Kaplan from Nixon Peabody LLP, and Tony Calandro from VOX Global. The panelists represented varying industries, from service to production, which provided a range of perspectives on what sustainability means to various sectors…
Excel Academy Gala
Last week Larry Spang, George Tremblay, and I had the pleasure of attending a fund raising celebration that was put on by Excel Academy Charter Schools. Excel serves the Boston area with three individual middle schools, one of which is a recently completed Arrowstreet project. With the recent approval of their charter expansion, they also plan to open a high school in the near future…
AST Iron Chefs Bring the Heat!
After what felt like a never-ending winter cold spell, Arrowstreet warmly welcomed the month of May this year with its annual Cinco De Mayo celebration and a Tex-Mex chili cook-off. Nine of our ardent chili makers competed in this year’s challenge with a wide array of sweet and spicy flavors, savory aromas, robust ingredients, and unmistakable presentations. Family and friends…
