YouthBuild Boston Designery Visits Arrowstreet

Students from YouthBuild Boston’s Designery visited Arrowstreet last month to see what we’re working on and how an architecture firm runs on a daily basis. Michael Chavez, one of the program’s managers and a classmate of mine from the Boston Architectural College, approached me about hosting this group as they tour several firms to find out what life could be like as an architect. David Burn gave a quick introduction, then Jessica Bessette and I gave presentations on some of the projects we’ve been working on, as well as the process we follow and the technology we use. We then toured the office to show the spaces we work in and more of the design process. The group had some great questions and will no doubt be amazing designers of their own one day.

Red Sox Opening Day

While we wished we were at the game for the Sox’s first game of the season (and finally, the first win!), we celebrated Opening Day in style in the office, complete with our favorite themed ice cream flavors. We also raised money for the Jimmy Fund through their Rally Against Cancer campaign.

Arrowstreet Volleyball Takes Silver Medal

The architectural volleyball league concluded its 2010-2011 season this week with Arrowstreet finishing 2nd overall. After completing the regular season with a record of 44-16—good enough for third overall—we made a great run through the playoffs and did not lose a single game until we reached the championship match. Despite playing some of our best volleyball, we fell to a very talented TJA team. Nevertheless, we are very proud of our silver medal finish, which is the best finish ever for an Arrowstreet volleyball team. Most importantly, we had a great time competing this season. As a team that prides itself on having a great time both on and off the court—evidenced by our colorful shirts and constant joking around—we look forward to next season and the challenge of winning the championship!

Waffles at Women’s Lunch Place

On a cold and sunny Saturday morning a group of ASTers met up at The Women’s Lunch Place (WLP) on Newbury Street. Arrowstreet is currently assisting WLP with a renovation and modernization of their space so we thought it would be a great time to get some people down to the shelter to volunteer and to see how the space functions. The group set up a waffle station (complete with toppings), then began cooking and serving waffles to the hungry guests…

Arrowstreet Celebrates 50 Years

This year, Arrowstreet celebrates our 50th anniversary as a firm. Over the last half century, 1,000+ employees have walked through our doors to become a part of the Arrowstreet family. Throughout these years and all of these employees, certain aspirations have remained central to the place— our sense of community within the firm and the sense of community in the places we shape. Be they the places we live, the places we work or shop, the places we learn, or where we go for entertainment, we have sought to advance that which gives life, enthusiasm, and opportunity to all whose lives we touch…

Career Day: Recruiting Tomorrow’s Designers

On Feb 4th we were invited to speak to some students at the St. Clement School in Medford for their career day. Lauren Haggerty and I had the opportunity to speak to 10 students about the Architectural and Graphic Design profession. Although teenagers are not particularly chatty at 8:30 in the morning, they did have some good questions and interest in the drawings and illustrations we brought along…

Centerbuild Reflections

Attendance was up this year at ICSC Centerbuild, the end-of-the-year retail and design conference held in Phoenix. After two years of declining attendance and pessimistic moods, the crowd was bigger and more enthusiastic about their prospects. In the conference keynote, Bill Taubman said consumers are back and shopping for apparel, not just one-time purchases of electronics. Sales numbers from October, November and “Black Friday” support his thesis, and indeed after the conference, retailers across the country had excellent holiday seasons…
