Summer Bowling at Flatbread Pizza

This summer at AST introduced a new weekly tradition of heading over to Sacco’s Bowl Haven for flatbread pizza, socializing, and candlepin bowling. It’s been a great way for the firm to blow off steam and engage in some (healthy) competition. Results this year showed an even spread week to week of close games and high intensity. Competition was fierce;…

ArrowstreetLive at the SMPS Awards Gala

I recently had the pleasure of attending the SMPS “Recognizing Outstanding Communication” (ROC) Awards Gala to see the best of the AEC industry’s marketing material for the year. Among the nominees this year in the Website category was ArrowstreetLive – incidentally, the only blog among the nominees! The submissions were undeniably inspiring, and we were honored to be included among such company.

Softball at Arrowstreet: The A-Team

Work hard and play hard: several of us Arrowstreeters have joined “The A-Team”, a softball team in the Boston architects’ league. Our team is a crew of employees from a few different firms around the area including Albert, Righter & Tittmann Architects, the MSCBA, Foley Fiore Architecture, Form and Place, and Arrowstreet. We are about halfway through the season and just shy of .500 at 3-4. It’s time to step up to the plate and finish the season strong. Go A-Team!

Student Tours at KIPP Academy Lynn

Over the past few months Matt Rice and I have had the opportunity to give the 7th, 8th and 9th grade students of KIPP Academy Lynn a tour of their new school, which is currently under construction, and speak with them about the role of an architect in this  project. We teamed together with the Consigli, the building contractor, to walk them around the site and share information about the building and process. It was a fun experience for all involved. The students had great questions and the excitement they had for their new space was apparent. The new KIPP Academy Lynn building is scheduled to open for the start of the 2012 school year…

How We Celebrate Red Sox Opening Day: Fighting Cancer & Eating Ice Cream

We celebrated Red Sox Opening Day on April 13th by getting together to make our own ice cream sundaes complete with all the fixin’s and a cherry on top while watching the home opener against the Tampa Bay Rays.  We also teamed up with the Jimmy Fund by creating our own Rally Team, The Arrowstreet Sox, to raise $85 to help support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber in their effort to provide hope to adults and children being treated for cancer worldwide.  A few of us were even lucky enough to see (and hear!) the formation of four F-16 Fighter Jets fly by our office on their way to Fenway Park, but we weren’t fast enough to snap a photo.  Go Sox!

AFH in the BAC Sustainable Design Program

I wanted to take a moment to share this video, put out by the BAC’s sustainable design program. The beginning shows our Artists for Humanity project, the shots taken during a tour I gave for students in the sustainable design degree program.

For more information, see the BAC’s page on the program.

Two Goats & Some Red Envelopes

Who knew Doppelbock translates into “double goat”?  On the first day of the 2012 Chinese New Year, a group of Arrowstreeters discovered this fact as we attended a beer tasting together at our local Not Your Average Joe’s. We sampled a Doppelbock-style beer called Fisherman’s Navigator, brewed by Massachusett’s own Cape Ann Brewing Co, and celebrated the start of the Chinese New Year by handing out lucky red envelopes. Traditionally given out during the Lunar New Year,  each envelope contained dollar bills- but  the luckiest of us, David Flajnik, found a $25 gift certificate to Changsho, a favorite buffet restaurant, in his red envelope. Stephanie and I each took home a Navigator pint glass to remember the evening; good drinks, good food, and good times were enjoyed by all.

Giving Back

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season in full swing, Arrowstreet always strives to make time to give back to our community. During the month of November we sponsor a Turkey Drive to benefit the students of The Next Wave / Full Circle and Argenziano Schools in Somerville. We love reading the thank-you letters sent to us by the students after Thanksgiving – they touch our hearts…

Arrowstreet’s Annual Holiday Party

As the calendar turns to the latter half of December, Arrowstreet hosts its annual Holiday Party at the office. The party this year was quite the success with the whole Arrowstreet family- including spouses, children, and a few Arrowstreet “alumni” and friends who stopped by to enjoy delicious foods and spirits. The children had their own room set up with arts and crafts, games, movies, and kid-friendly dinner. Computers throughout the office displayed photos from the year’s events, site visits, and office outings while people strolled around the space chatting, catching up, and sampling the tasty morsels being served…
