Arrowstreet’s design team was excited to participate in the Topping Off Ceremony of the King Open/Cambridge Street Upper Schools & Community Complex project, marking a major milestone. A topping off ceremony is a traditional symbol of good luck and progress of the construction process. For the King Open project it is also a symbol of Cambridge’s commitment to education. This project is the second of multiple new elementary and middle schools to be built across the city. It is also the first net zero emissions building in the city, showing the City’s commitment to sustainability as well. Above all this project is for the students, some of whom were able to join and share their voices in song for the ceremony. Arrowstreet’s team is very honored to work on such an impactful community project.
The building is being designed in association with William Rawn Associates and is scheduled to open Fall 2019. The complex includes an elementary school, middle school, preschool, after school, public school administration, public library branch, community pool, and over an acre of open space. As a net zero emissions project, the building is designed to use 43% less energy than a typical Massachusetts school and 70% less than the average school in the United States.
