As part of the shop drawing review process for the 85 South Service Road project on Long Island, I’ve been running clash detection between the structural steel and the aluminum curtainwall fabrication models. The sub-contractors submit 3-D models of the shop drawings that they have prepared, and those models are combined and checked for points of overlap. This effort is focused on the steel and curtainwall frames that make up the signature lobby space for the building. In that intricate area of the design, reviewing two-dimensional paper shop drawings alone would have been insufficient to address the complexity of the relationships between systems.
